Abstract

Duges in 1884 [Naturaleza (1882–1884) 6: 195–98] described and figured the “spinose ear tick” as Argas megnini. Subsequently, Marx (1895, Proc. Ent. Soc. Wash. 3: 195–201) figured this tick and designated it as Rhynchoprium spinosum (═Rhynchoprion Hermann, 1804, a synonym of Argas). The following year Neumann (1896, Mem. Soc. Zool. Fr. 9: 1–44) redescribed megnini and placed it in the genus Ornithodoros. Finally Banks in 1912 (Proc. Ent. Soc. Wash. 14: 96–99) proposed the generic name Otobius, a name which has, with few exceptions, been accepted by tick workers since that time, giving the combination Otobius megnini (Duges, 1884).
