Abstract

A class of generalized Fofonoff modes, both barotropic and baroclinic, are found in a β-plane channel presumably to model the circumpolar ocean in the presence of a bottom ridge. These generalized Fofonoff modes share many dynamic features with those in closed basins. Conserved quantities are employed to show that these generalized Fofonoff modes, like those in closed basins, are stable with respect to finite amplitude perturbations.
