Abstract

Beginning German texts have traditionally left to the individual instructor the task of explaining such idiomatic flavoring particles as auch, denn, and doch, although some recent books have followed the lead of Lohnes and Strothmann's German: A Structural Approach and attempted to provide idiomatic equivalents in English. A review of the more widely used newer textbooks indicates, however, that it is difficult to find brief, idiomatic catchwords in English which can be readily recalled by students but which at the same time succeed in capturing the flavor of the original German word or phrase, and this is particularly true of the particle doch. The individual explanations of doch found in six new textbooks, representing a majority of the beginning books published since 1974, are described in the following synopses:
