Abstract
Some general expressions for solenoidal stress fields are obtained from an application of the Stokes-Helmholtz decomposition as it relates to symmetric dyadics. Using these in conjunction with the Beltrami Michell equations, the known solutions of the equations of classical elasticity are deduced.
