Abstract

This note describes a numerically feasible method for parameter estimation in the multivariate beta (Dirichlet) distribution through the method of maximum likelihood. The Dirichlet distribution is used in many applications, including brand choice modelling in marketing, investigating past vegetation changes in biology, etc. Examples involving the consumer brand choices of regular ground coffee and proportions of fossil pollen in trees and some simulation results are given.
