Abstract
The purpose of this note is to clarify the role of the Hertz vector in the description of a source free electromagnetic field in vacuo. In particular we show that the total energy and the total helicity of both the electric field and the magnetic field can be expressed as time derivatives of the corresponding quantities for the Hertz vector.
