Abstract
This note seeks to clarify the nature of debates concerning freedom of the press in Restoration France. It shows that it was widely assumed that the State had a role in preventing abuses of press freedom, and that this policy was continued, in a modified fashion, by those who framed press legislation in the period after 1814. The note highlights the different positions adopted by the Dotrinaires and by Benjamin Constant.
