Abstract
We give a topological definition of the (fractional) intersection multiplicity of two curves at an isolated singular point of a surface and calculate this intersection multiplicity in the case of two generators of a cone (in the case of a quadric cone this multiplicity is 1/2). We also describe the neighbourhood of the vertex of a cone and compute the local homology and homotopy groups.
