Abstract

Effects brought by Doppler broadening of 238U on the effective cross sections — particularly on the elastic removal cross section χsr— were examined in the energy interval from 0.465 to 3.952 keV. The calculations were performed on the code RIFF RAFF-H (a homogeneous version of RIFF RAFF), which solves numerically the slowing down equation in ultra fine groups with lethargy width 10−4 for a composition containing resonant nuclides. It has been revealed that for 238U the same shielding factor cannot be applied to both a» and scattering cross section as done in the Russian group-constants set, and that the χsr, of light and medium nuclides has appreciable temperature dependence on account of the Doppler effect of 238U, especially in the low energy region.
