Abstract
The city of Hanford, California, is nearing completion of a five‐year effort to bring its drinking water supply into compliance with the new federal arsenic standard of 0.010 mg/L. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) adopted the new standard in January 2001, replacing the old standard of 0.05 mg/L. Water systems were required to comply with the new standard by January 2006. USEPA granted the city of Hanford a compliance order, extending the deadline until December 2009 to allow time to implement an action plan the city developed in 2005. Hanford is now in the last phase of the project, which is to confirm compliance after one year of quarterly sampling.
