Abstract

New getters are described in which extremely large specific surface areas are obtained with non-evaporable getter materials. They consist of a sintered mixture of zirconium and graphite which gives an extremely porous product, but nevertheless presents excellent mechanical properties. Experimental evidence concerning the bulk gettering action and the mechanical properties is presented. The getter is mounted with an integral filamentary heater which allows activation of the porous mass. Sorption characteristics are presented for H 2, N 2 and CO, with the getters activated in diverse practical conditions. Finally, a brief comparison with existing gettering techniques is made to indicate the fields of application of the new device.
