Abstract

Spectroscopic ellipsometry and the polar magneto-optical Kerr effect (0.6 < hv < 4.5 eV) have been used to study non-destructively the influence of RF sputter etching on the magnetic surface properties of the (100) face of manganese zinc ferrite single crystals. The effect of the sputtering can be described by the formation of a non-magnetic surface layer, which is presumably amorphous.
