Abstract

A noise suppression algorithm using the digital signal processing technique incorporated with the spectral subtraction technology in the audio frequency band has been developed in order to improve the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of the audio output of the FM radio receiver. By using a single DSP (digital signal processor) in which the algorithm is implemented, a prototype system has been constructed. Experimental results are presented. SNR improvements of up to 6 dB are consistently obtained in the range from weak to strong antenna input signal strengths. The levels of distortion and process noise generated by the introduction of the noise suppression system are lower than the detection threshold of the measuring equipment used. >
