Abstract

This is the second of a three-volume survey that chronicles musical history since 1750. This reference presents a panorama that centres on music but also lists important world events, cultural activities and distinguished contributions in both and literature. The format places a mine of music-related information about everyone who was anyone in any specific year at the reader's fingertips. It contains census and political information, as well as scientific discoveries, world exploration and more to create a complete yearly overview. Information for the Chronicle has been gathered from recognized authorities, magazines, newspapers and from primary sources and is organized on a year-by-year format beginning with 1800. Each year begins with selected world events and cultural highlights, including and literature, followed by musical events which is divided into nine sections: births and deaths listed by month and day; debuts; new positions; prizes and honours; biographical highlights; institutional openings; musical literature; and musical compositions by completion date - generally the emphasis here is on art music with some highlights on popular genres. The index provides access from either a name or term to the year and category letter.
