Abstract

SummaryThere are two serpentinophilous and nickel‐hyperaccumulating taxa within the Alyssum serpyllifolium complex in Europe – A. pinlodasilvae T. R. Dudley from Portugal, and A. serpyllifolium subspecics malacitanam Rivas Goday from Spain. The latter is raised to full specific status as A. mulucitanum (Rivas Goday) T. R Dudley, comb. & stat. nov. on the basis of demonstrating a different nickel‐accumulation capability at 0.6% tissue concentration on dry wight basis, in comparison with the 1.44% of A. pintodasilvae and the 0.0065% of A. serpyllifolium. In conjunction with the differential and diagnostic nickel content, numerous discontinuous morphological characters clearly distinguish A. malacitilanum from the taxa of closest affinity.
