Abstract
THE ACCUMULATION in recent years of new fossil hominid remains dating from the Lower Pleistocene, especially the rich material from Olduvai Gorge, has led to renewed discussions on the evolution of man. fragments originally described as habilis have contributed to our knowledge but also have raised a number of new questions, most of them leading ultimately to the main question of a monophyletic evolution from Australopithecus by way of the Middle Pleistocene erectus-type to the modern Homo sapiens. Somewhat resignedly, Tobias (1967: 47) states: The list of questions is endless: the grand synthesis is not yet in sight. problem, raised also by Thoma (1967) at the same time, is stated by Tobias (p. 46) as follows:
