Abstract

A brief summary of the recently reported differential load feed analysis of load-indentation measurements is given together with a relation to the conventional hardness calculation. The potential of the new approach for separation between coating and substrate properties, for interface strength quantification and for measurements at rough surfaces is demonstrated in connection with experimental results. As sample materials TiN on high speed steel as well as plasma-nitrided steel served. The roughness values of the samples ranged from 0.1 to 2.7 μm.
