Abstract

When cultured on a medium containing d-[ 14C 6]glucose and dl-tartrate, Penicillium charlesii G. Smith synthesizes a polygalactofuranoside containing 14C. Isotope from dl-[1, 4- 14C 2]tartrate is also incorporated under identical growth conditions. The novel structure of the polyhexose led to an investigation of the acid-extractable nucleotides of the organism to determine whether unique nucleosides or nucleotide diphosphofuranosides might be present. The isolation and partial identification of one such compound is described.
