Abstract

The band spectrum of SrI is excited in a high frequency discharge through a mixture of heated strontium metal and iodine vapour, from a 1 kW oscillator working at a frequency of 10-16 MHz. The spectrum reveals a number of new bands in the region lambda 3400- lambda 3600 AA degraded to shorter wavelengths. These bands are analysed and attributed to the D2 Sigma -x2 Sigma transition, analogous to the D-X system of SrF, SrCl and SrBr molecules. The P heads of the bands could be fitted into the following vibrational quantum formula within an accuracy of 1.0 cm-1 nu nu ' nu =28938.34+202.74( nu '+1/2)-0.84( nu '+1/2)2-174.4( nu +1/2)+0.4( nu +1/2)2.
