Abstract
In recent years, the hollow cathode discharge gun has been widely used in the metallurgical coating field. However, the design of its electromagnetic field is unreasonable, the gun body is large, its structure is intricate and its operation is not convenient. In order to overcome these shortcomings, through many years of study, the authors have developed a new type of hollow cathode discharge gun which is characterised by a simple structure, steady efficiency, propitious examination, etc. This gun uses only one magnet as a focusing and deflective pole instead of the normal four magnetic focusing poles. The electron beam can strike just to the centre position of the crucible by controlling the distance between the gun and the crucible and the electromagnetic field density. The new type of gun has been successfully applied to industry.
