Abstract

A new traffic control design technique is presented for application to large traffic networks with signalized intersections. The design method adopts a macroscopic viewpoint to establish a new traffic modelling procedure in which vehicle platoons are subdivided into main stream queues and turning queues. Optimization of the signal splits minimizes queue lengths in the steady state condition and improves traffic flow conditions, from the viewpoint of the travelling public. The application of the design method to a traffic network with thirty-three signalized intersections demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed technique.
