Abstract

In this paper, a new single-phase five-level voltage source inverter (VSI) topology is developed by using two-level unit and three-level unit with coupled inductor. The proposed topology can reduce the number of active switches as well as DC sources compared with the conventional single-phase five-level VSI topologies. Also, the proposed topology solves the neutralpoint voltage balancing issue because it does not need split of dc voltage capacitor. The operating principle is analyzed theoretically together with its switching state, and a current control scheme is developed to control the proposed topology. The simulation results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed VSI topology and its control scheme.
