Abstract
The number of generations is computed in the (2, 0) nonlinear sigma model of the E 8×E′ 8 heterotic string by using the family index theorem. Three generations of quarks/leptons with the gauge group SO(10) are realized for a vast class of multiply connected six-dimensional compact manifolds.
