Abstract

In the new temporary exhibition room in the national museum of ethnology, madrid, air-conditioning was not possible, but the physical construction of the site (described in detail) allowed for virtually no temperature variation between day and night. Other factors contributed to fairly stable humidity conditions. Heating was turned off, to avoid abrupt fluctuations. The influence of visitor heat/humidity was taken into consideration. Lighting was set at 150 lux, with additional showcase illumination. Sunlight was excluded. The exhibition, on african cultures, provided didactic material/information for three age levels. To avoid visitor fatigue (mental and physical), displays were spaced out, and rest areas provided. Photographs and plans.
