Abstract

Mechatronics requires, in the design of a system, the cooperation of the mechanical design of the sensory feedback and the overall computer control. As an example of mechatronic design, an artificial leg is described, which has a multiprocessor control system and a multiplicity of sensor feedback. The design of the leg by means of a CAD/CAM system is described. It is suggested that mechatronics provides a new philosophical framework for design. Various developments and future proposals together with the relationships to human needs and requirements are discussed.
