Abstract

The photophysical properties of the Tb(ppa)3·2H2O and Tb(ppa)3·phen solid complexes (ppa = 3-phenyl-2,4-pentanedione and phen= 1,10-phenanthroline) were studied and compared with the Tb:ppa included in a K2SO4 crystal matrix. The photophysical data of the Tb(ppa)3·2H2O revealed a highly luminescent material where the characteristic Tb3+ transitions were observed in the emission spectrum when excited at 334 nm. The lifetime for the 5D4→ 7F5 transition (λexe = 334 nm, λem = 544 nm) at room temperature is 0.67 ms. The beautiful green luminescent hourglass inclusion of the ionic pair Tb3+ :ppa in the K2SO4 crystal matrix presents a lifetime of 1.07ms (λexe = 304 nm, λem = 544 nm). Tb(ppa)3· phen shows the 5D4 → 7F5 transition (λem = 355 nm, λcm = 547 nm) at room temperature and a lifetime of 0.30 ms.
