Abstract

ABSTRACT The paper presents a simple method for transient stability assessment of a single machine-Infinite bus power system as well as multimachine power system using a new swallowtail catastrophe model. The control parameter of the above model is calculated algebraically and this reduces the computational burden significantly. The computation for critical fault clearing angle and critical fault clearing time of a typical power system using catastrophe theory has been demonstrated in each case and the same has been compared with the results obtained by the standard step-by-step numerical method.
