Abstract
Abstract A now sum rule for directional Compton profiles, based on the kinetic energy integral, is presented and applied to experimental and theoretical Compton profiles. This sum rule provides a test of the accuracy and reliability of theoretical and experimental Compton profiles as well as a certain degree of insight into the structure of directional difference profiles. The limits of accuracy of the sum rule are considered and it is shown that it should be possible to determine energies of organic molecules to an accuracy of 0.3 eV per atom.
