Abstract

A new graphite substrate holder has been described for the growth of mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) epilayers on CdTe substrates from Hg-rich solutions, using a dipping technique. This substrate holder has a cavity to hold multiple substrates and a groove for the free sliding movement of the shutter. The shutter lifts upon dipping into the melt, and closes on withdrawal from the melt, thus protecting the substrate surface from Hg vapour etching prior to and after growth. The substrate holder has been used successfully to grow MCT epilayers, and excellent results have been obtained.
