Abstract

Ophthalmopsylla (Eremedosa) celata, a new subgenus and species of flea primarily from Cricetulus (hamsters) and Apodemus (field-mice) in Kohighizar, Gilgit Agency in W Pakistan, is described and figured, along with Hopkinsipsylla occulta praeceps n.ssp., from Libya. The new subgenus is characterized by the reduction of the eye and presence of 2 rows of bristles on the occiput and the absence of spiniforms on the movable finger. Hopkinsipsylla occulta praeceps is immediately separable from the nominate form (from Egypt) by the relatively straight frontal margin of the head.
