Abstract

Cambodia has one of the highest prevalences of HIV infection in south-east Asia with 2.6% of adults (15-49 years) infected in 2003. With the assistance of international organizations and the reduced cost of antiretroviral generic drugs approximately 7500 HIV/ AIDS-infected patients in the country were treated with HAART in May 2005 whereas 35 000 patients will need HAART by 2009. To address this need the Cambodian authorities have committed to provide HAART to 26 600 people by the end of 2009 at health facilities that are located both in the capital city (Phnom Penh) and the provinces. It is crucial that biology markers such as the absolute CD4 cell counts are carried out on a large scale in remote facilities despite the fact that the provincial health system environment is fragile and resources are limited.
