PurposeThis paper aims to question a new strategic role for purchasers.Design/methodology/approachComparing current hot topics in purchasing with the application of system modeling/value thinking to the purchasing department of a company.FindingsA new vision of the roles of purchasers arises as creating value(s) for internal stakeholders and suppliers.Originality/valueThe application of system modeling/value management leads to a renewed vision of the company and the purchasers roles.
