Abstract
A new paramunnid species, Pentaceration bifficlyro sp. n., is described from New Zealand (Tasman Sea). Isopod specimens were collected in the framework of the Ocean Survey 2020 on the upper slope of the Challenger Plateau, off the west coast of New Zealand. Pentaceration bifficlyro sp. n. can be identified by the following characters: pereonite 1 lateral margin with few denticles and 1 stout spine, antennula article 5 elongated, about as long as article 2, pereonite 4 spine length 0.8 times pereonite 2 spine length. Pentaceration bifficlyro sp. n. is most similar to Pentaceration denticornis Just, 2011 and P. lancifera Just, 2011, but can be distinguished from both species by the possession of biramous uropods. It also resembles P. spinossisima Just, 2009, which can be differentiated from the new species by the shape of the pleotelson, the length of lateral spines of pereonite 4 as well as the shape of antenna articles 2 and 3. A distribution map of all Pentaceration species occurring in New Zealand waters is provided (© 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
