Abstract

Mt Kilimanjaro has been repeatedly climbed by botanical collectors some of whom, such as Volkens (1855 1917), P. J. Greenway (1897 1980) and H. J. Schlieben (1902 1975), spent some months on the mountain. However, John Grimshaw of the Animal Ecology Research Group, Dept. of Zoology, Oxford has recently managed to find undescribed plants on the northern side. Zehneria Endl., based on Z. baueriana Endl. described from Norfolk Island, has about 30 species in the Old World tropics of which 11 occur in Tanzania, with one, Z. scabra (L. f.) Sond., extending to India, Java and the Philippines. Grimshaw handed over to me several plants he had been unable to name and I at first considered the Zehneria to be a form of Z. scabra and could in fact match it at Kew
