Abstract

Schizoplasmodiopsis variabilis sp.nov., a new species of the protostelid genus, was isolated from dead plant parts on a dicotyledonous tree in Honolulu, Hawaii. The trophic stage varies from uninucleate amoebae to plasmodial forms. The sporocarps are also variable, numerous spores lacking stalks but attached to the culture surface by short extensions of the sheath, others with stalks 1.2–18.7 μm long. Spores are not readily detachable from stalks, even when contacted by a micromanipulator needle. Cysts are very variable in size and shape.
