Abstract

A new species of skate, Raga cortezensis, is described from nine specimens captured in the Gulf of California. The new species is most similar to R. inornata, which occurs in the Gulf of California and along the western coast of the United States and northern Baja California, Mexico. The new species is distinguished from R. inornata in maturing at a smaller size, in possessing a shorter snout, and in having fewer predorsal tail vertebrae, pectoral radials and tooth rows in the upper jaw. It also differs from R. inornata in several features of the neurocranium, scapulocoracoid, and clasper.
