Abstract

One of the commonest of the many species of Plectranthus in Malawi is a very viscid, erect, blueor purplish-flowered annual species which is widespread in all three regions of the country. It flowers in the late rains and during the dry season, and may be conspicuous when little else is flowering. Although fairly abundant collections of the species are now available, including a few from Tanzania, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, it seems never to have been named, and has become well known in the Kew herbarium as 'Plectranthus sp. 16'. We have pleasure in here naming the species in honour of Dr J. H. Seyani, director of the National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens of Malawi, who has had an interest in Plectranthus for some time (see Kew Bull. 42: 687 699 (1987)) and is familiar with this species in the field.
