Abstract

During the investigation of intestinal entozoa occurring in Southern California lizards, a hitherto undescribed species of the intestinal ciliate Nyctotherus has been encountered on several occasions in different saurian hosts. This species was found to occur frequently (60%) in the ovoviviparous night lizards, Xantusia vigilis and X. henshawi, and with a much lower incidence in the desert iguana, Dipsosaurus dorsalis, and the chuckwalla, Sauromalus obesus. The heterotrichous ciliate-and its cysts could be recovered sometimes in great numbers from the cecal contents of the lizards. Studies of this species were made, both in the fresh living state and following fixation and staining with haematoxylin.
