Abstract

Cyperus nicobaricus V.P. Prasad, belonging to the section Diclidium of the genus Cyperus L. is described here as a new species. It is closely allied to Cyperus odoratus L., but differs mainly in its perennial habit, short size of the plant, reduced inflorescence with congested spikelets and smaller achenes. The distinguishing characters are discussed along with a taxonomic key to differentiate it from the closely allied C. odoratus. An image of the type of the new species is also provided, along with its floral characters.
