Abstract

Lathyrus belinensis N. Maxted & D. J. Goyder sp. nov. L. odorati L. affinis sed vexillo croceo-flavo venulis rubris, alis oblongis quam vexillo tertia parte brevioribus, carina alas aequanti auriculis basalibus rotundatis, legumine breviore curvato stylum versus sensim angustato venis prominentibus reticulatis, seminibus verrucosis, hilo c. 10% circumferentem seminis amplectanti differt. Typus: Turkey, Maxted, Kitiki & Allkin 4392 (holotypus K; isotypi E, G, MO, SPN, Herbarium of the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute, Izmir). Climbing or scrambling annual. Stems 50-200 cm, broadly 2-winged. Primary axis glabrous or glabrescent; side shoots with short, minutely tuberculate-based hairs. Leaves with 1 pair of leaflets, ending in a manybranched tendril; leaflets 15-65 x 7-30 mm, ovate, elliptic or oblanceolateelliptic with an obtuse, mucronate apex and undulate-crispate margins, veins conspicuous beneath; petiole 10-33 mm, winged; stipules 5-15 x 1-3 mm, semi-hastate, upper lobe lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate. Peduncle (3-)16-28 cm, striate, aristate or not, with (1-)3-5 scented flowers; pedicels 5-10 mm; bracts minute, subulate, deciduous. Calyx 7-9(-11) mm, 10-nerved, 5 nerves continued into teeth; teeth subequal, approximately equal to tube, ovate, acute. Standard 20-26 mm (including a claw of c. 5 mm), orbicular with an emarginate apex, orange-yellow with conspicuous red veins; wings 14-18, 2/3 the length of the standard, oblong, yellow; keel about equalling wings, with rounded basal auricles. Ovary densely covered in short, tuberculate-based hairs and sessile glands, the hairs less conspicuous on mature fruit; style 8-10 x 0-7-0-8 mm, pubescent. Legume 18-35 x 4-7 mm, oblong, tapering gradually towards each end, somewhat curved with prominent reticulate veins. Seeds 25(-8), c. 4 mm, subcuboid and strongly angled, brown, verrucate; hilum c. 1 mm long, approximately 10% of seed circumference.
