Abstract

The taxonomy of the genus Ilex in Malesia is in need of reassessment. This is particularly marked in New Guinea, further compounded by the presumed destruction of Berlin type specimens. I aim to comment further on this at a later stage. Loesener (1924) listed L thorelii Pierre, L. ledermannii Loes. (var. ovalis Loes. and var. elliptica Loes.), L schlecteri Loes. and I. spicata Loes. from Papuasia. He stated that only the last had previously been known from the region, though S. Andrews (pers. comm.) felt that even this determination may have been suspect. H. O. Baker (1923) had described I. forbesii from Sogeri the previous year, from a collection seen and annotated by Loesener. Merrill & Perry (1939, 1941, 1949) described five new species as well as one variety of a west Malesian species, namely I. archboldiana, I. brassii, I. cristata, L scabridula, I. versteeghii and L malaccensis Loes. var stenura. R. Kanehira & S. Hatusima annotated Kyushu University Herbarium specimens from their 1940 collections in Nabire, Papua, as two new but unpublished species, I. nabirensis Kaneh. & Hatus. and I. planiclada Kaneh. & Hatus. P. van Royen (1982) suggested the presence of the Bornean endemic L havilandii Loes., determined by H. Ridley (1916) as this species from a Kloss collection in New Guinea. L. Pedley (1984) described a subspecies of an Australian species, L. arnhemensis (F. Muell.) Loes. subsp. ferdinandi, occurring in coastal New Guinea. Thus a total of 11 species and three varieties of Ilex have been described to date from New Guinea.
