Abstract

One impression of a bee fly was discovered during investigations of fossil insects from the Ruby River Basin of Montana. This specimen represents a new species belonging to the genus Alepidophora Cockerell. The species is the 1st member of this genus to be described from this locality. Several species of the extinct genus Alepidophora have been described from the Florissant deposits (Oligocene) of Colorado (Cockerell 1909, Melander 1949). The fossil was found in paper shales of Oligocene age between Peterson and Morman Creeks, sec. 23, T. 7 S., R. 5 W., Madison County, Mont. The diggings are located ca. 13 miles from the town of Alder. A brief description of the geologic history of this region can be found in a previous paper (Lewis 1971).
