Abstract

The genus Boscia Lam. includes about 20 species occurring in the semiarid regions of Africa, Madagascar and Arabia. Eight infrageneric taxa are so far recorded from Kenya (Elffers et al., 1964; Beentje, 1989). During research on East African Capparaceae a specimen from Tana River District, doubtfully referred to B. pruinosa Chiov., was examined; this intriguing species is so far known only from the holotype, Paoli 615 (FT), collected at the beginning of the century in the Bay Region, southern Somalia (Chiovenda, 1916; Fici, 1993). The plant from Kenya shows marked differences from B. pruinosa, resembling it only in vegetative characters, and is therefore described as a new species.
