Abstract
Alopecurus tzvelevii, a new species from Central European Russia, is described. It is closely related to A. pratensis but differs in its smaller spikelets which are brownish (not green) when mature, shorter anthers, and the distribution of hairs along the glume keel which are located along the entire glume in A. tzvelevii, but do not reach the glume tips in A. pratensis. The new species is endemic to the steppe zone of the Central Black Earth Region of European Russia. It prefers meadows with rich and wet soils, frequently with above‐average levels of salinity. The species is named in honor of Prof. Nikolai Nikolaievich Tzvelev (1925 – 2015), an outstanding Russian botanist.
