Abstract

Acalypha baretiae (Euphorbiaceae: Acalyphoideae), found in western Madagascar, is described and illustrated as a new species. Based on morphology, A. baretiae is classified in Acalypha subgenus Linostachys. This subgenus has not been reported before from Madagascar or from the West Indian Ocean Region. In addition, Acalypha baretiae is the third known species of Acalypha to have 2-lobed ovaries with two styles, after A. caturus Blume from Asia and Oceania, and A. deamii (Weath.) H.E.Ahles from North America. Comments on the systematics of morphologically related species are also included.
