Abstract

There are relatively few published records of chiggers from California which were found on reptilian hosts. Gould (1956, p. 73) listed five species from seven kinds of lizards, and Brennan (1959, pp. 5 and 6) described an additional species from the Banded Gecko. In 1957, nearly 300 reptiles of 43 species, including two turtles, 23 species of lizards, and 16 of snakes were examined for ectoparasites. More than 50 individuals, consisting of 13 species of lizards and four of snakes, all from southern California, were parasitized by larval chiggers. Six species of chiggers were identified, including one new species described below.
