Abstract

Summary. Cyrtochloa mindoroensis S. Dransf. is described as new from Mindoro, Philippines. Dinochloa major Pilg. from Bataan, Luzon, is transferred to Cyrtochloa as C. major (Pilg.) S. Dransf. The genus Cyrtochloa was described in 1998 (Dransfield 1998), with five species found in the island of Luzon, Philippines. All the species of Cyrtochloa have restricted distributions. Cyrtochloa can be characterized by possessing erect culms with arching tips, indeterminate inflorescences, long hairy styles, and large fleshy fruits with basal embryos. The leaf-blades are slightly rigid, and petiolate, with asymmetrical bases, one side cordate or rounded, the other attenuate. Cyrtochloa resembles Dinochloa Bilse, in having one-flowered spikelets lacking rachilla extensions, and fleshy fruits with thick pericarp and without endosperm. Cyrtochloa can be differentiated from Dinochloa by the non-climbing culms, leaf-blades with asymmetrical bases, hairy styles, and basal embryos. The specimens of the following new species and new combination are incomplete; the two most important features, young shoots and culm-leaves are not present. Fortunately, the leaf-blades with asymmetrical bases, ovaries with long hairy styles, and fruit with thick fleshy pericarp are present, allowing placement in Cyrtochloa.
