Abstract

An unusual branching venous gas pattern was demonstrated on abdominal plain films in a case of small bowel volvulus. When gas is noted in the mesenteric vein without portal venous gas, mesenteric venous obstruction and gangrene of the small intestine secondary to volvulus or incarcerated hernia should be considered, especially in a patient with clinical evidence of small bowel obstruction.
