Abstract

Continuing our research on the chemical constituents from the aerial parts of Anthemis melanolepis L., a Greek endemic species belonging to the section Cota [1], we report here the isolation and identification of a new sesquiterpene lactone. The isolation was proceeded according to the Bohlmann isolation method, slightly modified [2]. The structure of the isolated compound 1 was elucidated by spectroscopic methods, particularly high-field NMR spectroscopy (1H-NMR, 1H-1H COSY, NOESY, HSQC, HMBC). Compound 1, namely anthemin C, is a new naturally occurring eudesmanolide. Besides compound 1, there were also isolated twelve known sesquiterpene lactones, one terpene, one triterpene, eight flavonoids and three phenolic acids.
