Abstract

The described screening method for the SGOT activity determination enabled to select 238, i. e. 2.2% out of the 10.811 screened blood donors in whom a detailed liver function examination was indicated. In 136 of them, i. e. in 1.5% of the whole population a latent pathologic state was confirmed by means of activity determination of serum glutamic pyruvic acid transaminase and further symptoms. A detailed clinical study of this narrower selection found in 38.9% only a transitory SGPT activity elevation, in 11.1% this elevation remained constant in absence of further somatic symptoms, in 27.8% suspected and mild hepatopathies were diagnosed, 6.7% corresponded to the diagnosis chronic hepatitis or liver cirrhosis, in 13.2% the pathological liver function tests accompanied a bile tract disease and in 2.2% they accompanied ulcus duodeni. We may conclude that a positive serum glutamic oxalacetic transminase activity screening test indicates the delay of blood collection and a complete examination of the donor. Being very simple and sensitive, the screening method may be recommended not only for the blood donors screening before blood collection, but may be used also for preventive screening of other population groups.
